Last week, Capt. Rosemary Mariner passed away in Knoxville, Tenn. Mariner was a retired U.S. Navy pilot and was the first female to command a naval aviation squadron. Mariner was 65 and faced a ongoing battle with ovarian cancer.

Last week, for the first time in history, the Navy conducted a flyover using all female pilots for a Missing Man Flyover over a cemetery in Maynardville, Tenn. The flyover typically involves four aircraft, which fly in a V-shaped formation until one of them peels away, flying sharply upward.

The women who participated said Captain Mariner’s work was instrumental in enabling them to pursue their careers.
