When and how did you start your business?

I started Swain Enterprises in 2020 with the goal of becoming a general contractor that could make a real difference for both clients and veterans. As a service-disabled veteran, I saw an opportunity to bring the same discipline, commitment, and focus that I learned during my military service into the business world. The early days were challenging, especially navigating government contracting, but my experience in the field helped me build valuable relationships and trust.

Business Growth Challenges - Growing Through Challenge and Change

What were some of the challenges in starting your business?

Starting Swain Enterprises came with its fair share of challenges. In the beginning, navigating the complexities of government contracting was a major hurdle. As a new company, breaking into the industry and competing against established firms was tough. Building a reliable network of subcontractors and finding skilled employees took time. However, my military background taught me resilience, problem-solving, and the importance of persistence. These experiences helped me push through those early challenges and build a strong foundation for Swain Enterprises.

What is the key to the success of your business?

The key to the success of Swain Enterprises has been a combination of integrity, hard work, and a strong focus on relationships. From day one, we’ve committed to delivering high-quality work and exceeding client expectations. Building trust with our clients, employees, and partners has been crucial. Additionally, our dedication to creating opportunities for veterans and fostering a team environment where everyone feels supported has helped us stand out. Staying agile and adapting to challenges has also been essential. Ultimately, our success comes from our people and the values we operate by - service, excellence, and giving back to the community.

What lessons learned can you share with people to make their business succeed?

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of perseverance. Starting and growing a business is rarely smooth, so you have to be prepared for setbacks and stay focused on your goals. Another key lesson is to build relationships and treat every connection as valuable. Whether it’s with clients, partners, or your own team, strong relationships are the backbone of a successful business.

What pitfalls should they avoid?

One of the biggest pitfalls to avoid is trying to do everything on your own. As a business owner, it's easy to get caught up in every detail, but delegation and building a strong team are crucial for growth.

What other information about you and your business would you like to share with the NaVOBA Community?

Swain Enterprises is a 100% veteran-owned business, and our mission goes beyond just completing projects—we are dedicated to empowering veterans and creating opportunities for those transitioning from military to civilian life. Our company has experienced tremendous growth, with a 445% increase in 2022-2023 alone, and we attribute much of that success to our commitment to mentorship. We're passionate about helping fellow veterans navigate the complex world of government contracting and entrepreneurship. I’m always eager to connect with others in the veteran community, share lessons learned, and support each other’s journeys. Together, we can build stronger businesses and create lasting impacts.
