Becker Digital has had the opportunity to provide communications, marketing, and public relations services to organizations in agriculture, education, government, military/veteran, and the nonprofit sector.
In 2015, I was in the process of transitioning out of the military and evaluating my post-military career options. I knew that I wanted a civilian career that provided me with the flexibility to spend time with my family while taking into account continued medical treatment for my combat-related injuries. Many of the positions I applied and interviewed for required extensive travel and time away from family - job requirements that did not align with my post-military lifestyle priorities.
While starting a business is by no means an easy task, I knew that entrepreneurship would provide me the autonomy and work-life balance that I desired. I utilized entrepreneur resources through the SBA, PTAC, and VBOC to learn more about positioning my business for long-term success. These resources, along with NaVOBA, helped me navigate my entrepreneurial journey.
A few immediate challenges I faced as a new business owner included limited professional (civilian) network and financial resources. While the military had provided me with extensive leadership training, operating and growing a business in the civilian world presented a new set of challenges. I worked with consultants and mentors to help identify my company’s core competencies and evaluate future opportunities. In the military, you learn to “improvise, adapt, and overcome,” and that’s the approach I took as my company addressed business challenges head-on.
Giving back to our communities as a business and individuals is an extremely important aspect of business and professional growth. In 2019, Becker Digital provided over $25,000 in in-kind services to nonprofit organizations serving our military and veteran community. In addition to our nonprofit pro bono program, Becker Digital’s leadership team routinely volunteers with nonprofit organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Manna Food Pantry, Wreaths Across America, and multiple veteran service organizations.
